Q&A: Can ‘Nature-based Solutions’ help address climate change?

Carbon Brief

With the growing prevalence of ‘Nature-based Solutions’ (NbS) in national and international climate pledges, it is fundamental to understand the role of NbS in climate negotiations and address the debates around its effectiveness. This website provides an overview of NbS, its definition and how it has developed since its original conception. Various concerns around NbS are mentioned, including inconsistent mitigation potential estimates, discrepancies over land and resource use when implementing NbS approaches and the challenge of balancing long- and short-term results as well as conservation and mitigation. Many of these concerns stem from a “lack of clear definitions and principles” attributed to NbS and its frequent co-option by powerful actors to serve socially and environmentally unfavourable agendas. It is thus critical that the limitations of Nbs are acknowledged and addressed in order to tackle carbon emissions and global warming effectively. Recognising also the role of people (i.e., indigenous communities) in this endeavour is paramount.
