A new report from Friends of the Earth International spotlights how ‘Nature-based Solutions’ are a dangerous deception and distraction from the real solutions to the climate crisis. The report traces the origins of NbS, how it is manipulated by big business, and what is driving its popularity. The report finds that NbS would allow corporations and governments to continue ‘business as usual’ rather than cutting carbon emissions at source. The amount of land required to achieve this scale of carbon mitigation would result in the forceful displacement of farmers and communities, destroying their livelihoods and razing local wildlife. Hence, the concept threatens to co-opt and corrupt genuine close-to-nature farming approaches such as agroecology and community forest management, led by social and peasant movements.
